Wild Horizons “The Elephant Camp”
 

Situated a mere 20 minute drive from the town of Victoria Falls, The Elephant Camp is a conservation tourism facility that specializes in training and supporting abandoned or rescued elephants. The family-owned organization works towards promoting the education and conservation of all wildlife, and supports local anti-poaching efforts. Through The Elephant Camp enterprise, students have the opportunity to experience all walks of life with an emphasis on elephant related research and biological monitoring. In addition the facility is a tourism operation offering elephant rides to international clientele. The facility is not fenced and thus has exposure to natural flora and fauna of the region.

Accommodation:
 
You will be accommodated in spacious two person tents. Ablutions facilities are available with flush toilets and hot and cold running water. Simple meals will be provided from the facilities kitchens. A staff member will take care of laundry. Internet access is available at any of the Internet Café's in the town of Victoria Falls until the land line is established. It is recommended that students bring a laptop if they will need internet access outside of Victoria Falls . There is available transport to and from Victoria Falls twice a day, once in the a.m. once in the p.m.

Projects Available:
  • Vegetation impact of the domestic elephant. This would require someone who could establish and monitor vegetation surveys.
  • Monitoring of baby elephants, including: administration of formula, suckling, walking, social interaction, feeding, etc monitored and documented
  • Specialist Research on elephant socialization in relation to age and hormone levels (this requires a student with Vet experience)
  • Monitor the progress of the two orphaned elephant - "Malasha" and "Dojewe" in respect to their physical and social progress
  • Student needed to work with Wild Horizons on their marketing and administrative processing of tourism operations.
  • Interns with botany degree or equivalent experience are needed to carry out a vegetation survey and form an herbarium for the area (grasses, trees and shrubs)
  • An intern is needed to establish a check-list for the birds of the area
Other Projects: anti poaching, elephant care, feeding baby elephants, building new pens, community work and other management type work

Who:
Your hosts will be Gavin and Shaylene Best who are the Owner/managers of the Elephant camp. They have a team of competent guides and staff working at the camp with whom you will have daily contact.

Cost:
 
The cost for this facility is US$350 per week.
