Auros Ranch
  

     Auros Ranch is situated in the Kartsveld mountainous region of Northern Namibia.  The region is semi-arid but has one of the largest variety of bird and plant concentrations in the entire country.  If you are someone looking for a challenge and would enjoy living in a rustic setting this is the place for you.  The Ranch is situated between the towns of Grootfontein and Otavi.  Approximately 2-3 hours south east of Etosha National Park.  Namibia has a large German influence, and that presence can been felt throughout the region.  Infrastructure in Namibia is quite good, being established by South Africa many years ago, it has been well maintained, and technology in cities and towns includes fiber-optic cable connections.  That noted, the Auros itself is quite rural, and undeveloped other than a main house used by staff and chalets for your accommodation.  The terrain has not been altered and included indigenous species of plants, plains game, and bird life.

Accommodation:
  Interns for this facility will be independent and self-sufficient.  The price is reduced to reflect this.  Interns are asked to work at this facility in pairs, as social interaction will be limited to only the two interns on site, a once a week visit from the mangers, and occasionally the staff at the old house.  Interns will be accommodated in the tourist chalets, which have running water but no electricity (gas stove).  There is a self-catering kitchen and BBQ/Braai area.  At the old farmhouse there is an ultraphone link which can be used for internet access if necessary.  We do ask all telephone time be paid for by the intern.  There is no transport on the Ranch, a weekly run to Auros is made by the mangers and supplies can be restocked at this point.  NOTE: THIS IS NOT FOR SISSIES!!!!

Projects:

  This Ranch would like to be developed over time to accommodate tourists.  Student projects would include making suggestions and organizing repairing or establishing new buildings or equipment.  Making a layout of the Ranch and initiating new foot trails, repairing the fence, etc.  Another project could be looking at the introduction of Cattle on the land for planned grazing and tick and disease reduction.  Business development in a business plan, looking at advertising and promotion.  Leopard research, plant and bird surveys (including nesting sites), establishing biological monitoring, and Karst Cave research are all projects Auros would like interns to look at.

Cost:
The Cost per week for Auros is US$50. 
NOTE  This is a Self-Catering Facility so you pay out of pocket for your own food, drinks, etc.  Given the locality of this facility, time-off can be arranged if you need to go to town with the managers.

Your hosts for Auros will be Mecki and Brigitte Schneider, their homestead is 100kms from Auros though.
